New online platform launched for flood preparedness

The UK government and the Environment Agency have launched a new online platform, Flood Action Online, to coincide with Flood Action Week. This central resource is designed to help households understand their specific flood risk and take practical steps to mitigate potential damage. Users can access clear guidance on preparing flood plans, sign up for automated flood warnings, and receive real-time weather alerts from the Met Office. The initiative aims to empower residents to identify property-level resilience measures that could protect their homes.

To strengthen national infrastructure, the government is investing 4.2 billion pounds between April 2023 and March 2029 to repair existing defences and construct new ones. This programme aims to provide better protection for 200,000 properties, with an estimated economic benefit of 27.9 billion pounds in avoided damages. By the end of this period, authorities target reaching a 93.5% condition rating for all flood defence assets, ensuring they remain effective during extreme weather events. A newly formed Flood and Drought Resilience Taskforce has also been established to coordinate long-term planning against these changing climate challenges.

For residents in the UK, including members of the Turkish community, these updates underscore the importance of personal preparedness as winter approaches. While the Environment Agency maintains a 24/7 emergency response capacity, including hundreds of mobile pumps and temporary barriers, officials stress that public involvement is vital. Residents are encouraged to proactively check their flood status via the new portal and follow all official warnings. With climate change leading to more frequent and unpredictable weather shifts, these resources are intended to help families protect their property and ensure safety during severe weather incidents across the country.
