First week
Check your eVisa and UKVI account
Your immigration status is digital. Sign in to your UKVI account and check your details; employers and landlords will ask for a share code.
Register with a GP
Registering is free. The NHS says you do not need proof of address or immigration status to register.
Know the emergency numbers: 999 and 111
999 when a life is at risk; NHS 111 (phone or online) for urgent health problems that are not life-threatening.
Open a bank account
If you have no proof of address yet, many banks offer a basic account; you will need a UK account for wages and rent.
Join the Turkish WhatsApp groups in your city
Reach the community in your city for jobs, housing, schools and everyday questions.
First two weeks
Protect your deposit when you rent
In England the landlord must put your deposit in a government-backed protection scheme and give you its details.
Tell your council about Council Tax
Tell the council your new address. If you are the only adult in the home you can ask for a 25% discount.
Apply for a National Insurance number if you have none
You need one to work. If you can prove your right to work you can start before the number arrives.
Apply for a school place for your children
You apply through the council; children arriving mid-year make an in-year application.
First month
Check your tax code once you start work
A wrong tax code on your payslip means paying too much tax; you can correct it in the HMRC app or your account.
Driving: your Turkish licence has a time limit
After you become resident you can drive on a non-GB licence for up to 12 months; after that you need a GB licence.
Learn the travel discounts
In London, daily caps on Oyster and contactless; on trains, a Railcard saves up to a third.
Check whether you need a TV Licence
You need a TV Licence to watch live TV or use BBC iPlayer; not for other on-demand services only.
Find out how the Turkish consulate works
Passports, civil registry and address registration are handled by appointment through konsolosluk.gov.tr.
General information; it can differ with your visa and situation. See the linked official page for the details.
