What changes when you become a British citizen? Passport (£102), voting, registering children (£1,000), bringing family, dual citizenship and differences from ILR
Short answer
GOV.UK: naturalisation costs £1,709 plus a £130 ceremony fee; registering a child is £1,000. An adult passport is £102 online. Citizens can vote in general elections; dual citizenship is allowed. For partner sponsorship ILR and citizenship both suffice.

- This post is general information and does not assess anyone's personal situation. It is based on GOV.UK and the other official pages as they were on 18 October 2026. Amounts are updated each April and rules can change.
- Citizenship is a different status from ILR: ILR is a type of permission, citizenship means being a citizen of the country. Below are the fees, passport, voting, children and dual citizenship.
