Can you do a master’s in the UK without a bachelor’s degree? Associate degree (MYO) graduates and admission through work experience

Published: Last checked: October 20265 min read

Short answer

There is no general rule; the university and programme decide. QAA says master's entrants can be honours graduates or people whose work experience convinces admissions staff. Keele online asks for 2-3 years, Henley's Executive MBA over 5 years of management. No example names an associate degree.

Who does this apply to?

  • This is general information. It does not assess anyone's personal situation and does not say that any admission will happen. It is for people with a two-year vocational school (MYO, associate) diploma from Türkiye who have worked for years and are considering a master's degree in the UK. You may hear of acquaintances who did a master's this way; this post explains from the universities' own pages under what conditions that is possible (October 2026).

Short answer

  • There is no general rule such as "2-year MYO + 5 years' experience = master's admission". Each university and programme sets its own conditions.
  • But some programmes accept work experience as an alternative to a bachelor's degree. According to the quality body QAA's statement on master's degrees, these degrees attract both people with an honours bachelor's in a related subject and people whose experience from work or other means gives admissions staff confidence in their ability to succeed. Some professional (practice) master's may also require entrants to be working in a particular profession.

Examples from university pages

  • Keele University (online MSc programmes): for people without a recognised degree the page asks for at least 3 years of relevant computing, IT or data management experience for the MSc Computer Science; at least 2 years for the MSc Management; at least 3 years in education for the MA Education. The experience must be at graduate level, in a managerial or professional capacity, and is assessed case by case. The programmes are delivered online.
  • Henley Business School (Executive MBA): a good degree and relevant work experience (at least 3 years of management) are asked. Candidates without a degree may be considered with over 5 years of management experience. That is, not any job but management experience. You are also expected to attend modules at Henley. Required documents include a CV, one professional reference and a personal statement.
  • Birkbeck, University of London: its Türkiye page makes a good bachelor's degree (for example a GPA of 3.0 for a 2:1) the basic condition. The page says applicants with relevant work experience may be admitted "with a lower-level degree"; but it is not clear from the page whether that means a lower bachelor's grade or a below-bachelor's qualification. The associate degree is not mentioned in the master's section. It appears (as "Önlisans Derecesi") only as a direct-entry route to undergraduate degrees (final GPA of 3.0/4.0 or equivalent). All applications are considered individually.

What does this mean for an MYO graduate?

  • None of the three examples explicitly counts a Turkish associate degree as master's entry. So "a friend was admitted" cannot be applied to someone else without knowing which university, which programme and which route was used.
  • Programmes open to experience are often post-experience, executive or online programmes. Conventional full-time campus master's usually ask for a bachelor's.
  • Alternative routes: apply to a programme that accepts experience; enter a bachelor's programme directly with the associate degree and then go on to a master's (whether this is possible depends on the university); or a university's master's preparation programme (Pre-Masters / Master's Foundation). The Birkbeck page mentions such a preparation programme for those who do not meet the requirements.

What is looked at in an application?

  • The relevance of the experience to the field, the level of responsibility and how well it is documented (employer letter, CV, reference) are decisive. The number of years alone is not enough.
  • English: the Keele page accepts IELTS 6.0 (no component below 5.5) or other tests. Henley asks for "proof of English language ability". Scores vary by programme.

Visa, ATAS and money

  • If you come to the UK for this you need a Student visa with a licensed sponsor's offer; the admission decision is the university's. The GOV.UK documents page gives no detail on previous qualifications.
  • If the subject is in certain technology areas an ATAS certificate may be needed; GOV.UK says Türkiye is not on the exemption list.
  • If you live in the UK, look at the GOV.UK conditions for the Master's Loan: they include 3 years' residence and the course being an eligible master's. The page does not state a bachelor's degree requirement for the loan; but admission to the course is still the university's decision.

If you want to use it in Türkiye

  • We could not find on official pages whether YÖK equivalence of a master's diploma requires a bachelor's diploma. If you plan to use it in Türkiye, get written information from YÖK's Equivalence Department before you apply.

Points to watch

  • Official pages and admission conditions change. This post is a general summary.
