Can ILR holders get Universal Credit? Conditions, monthly amounts, the 55p taper, the £16,000 savings limit and sponsor undertakings

Short answer

GOV.UK says an ILR holder can apply for benefits if eligible. Universal Credit needs age 18+, under State Pension age, living in the UK and savings of £16,000 or less; single 25+ gets £424.90 a month. Sponsor undertakings and habitual residence are checked separately.

In short

  • This post is general information and does not assess anyone's personal situation. It is based on GOV.UK and the other official pages as they were on 18 October 2026. Amounts are updated each April and rules can change.
  • Universal Credit (UC) is the main monthly benefit for people on a low income or unable to work. Child, rent, care and disability amounts are combined in one payment.
  • GOV.UK's ILR page says an ILR holder can "apply for benefits if eligible". ILR does not close the door, but it does not make you eligible on its own: income, savings, residence and, in some cases, a sponsor undertaking are checked separately.
